A simple man once stood beside me
We would march side by side
As orders flew overhead.
This simple man, far from home, stood beside me
As rifle fire hit our dead.
We secured much ground, many streets,
This man and I
With others following close behind.
One day this man was careless
And walked alone,
Never again would we march side by side.
Sandboxes are rough to trek through
When one is harmed and alone.
I remember this simple man
Who stood beside me
Even though he is long
Gone.
