Fragment II

The Swarthy Bard

Splashing, thrashing, wildly crashing
       rages the rolling sea
like a half-tortured serpent swirled
       in waves of misery!

Through this tempest and angry night,
       a vessel from afar
sails by the dim, faint, speckled glow
       of heaven's compass star.
