Gender Bender

Frank J III

It seems that if you are born a certain gender

There are certain traits that you must surrender

No matter what they are skills musts be learned

Developed and practiced to receive their return

If you are a male should you automatically be able

To measure, saw and nail to build a table

Or to make sure a board is level and straight

To sand, strip, stain and paint

If yo are a woman should you automatically know

How to follow a pattern, cut and sew

Or how to wash, clean and mop

And how to cook, bake and grocery shop

Being a guy should you be into sports

Anything with a ball or competition of all sorts

To anything physical should you be attacked

Brawn over brains is how you attacked it

Being a girl should you be into th arts

Ballet, art, plays and opera a la cart

To anything passive should you be attracted

Brains over brawn is how you attacked it

So, between male and female, stereotyping exist

For century after century, it' s hard to resist

Each gender has it's dominate trait

To those genders each trait dominates

Brawn over brain male dominate

Brain over brawn females relate

Perhaps over time a combination will occur

Or maybe the separation each will prefer

  • Comment from author about the poem: I am not good at wood working. One day I was trying to measure and saw some limber and was having trouble. My wife stated she didn't understand how I was a male and didn't know how to do all these things. The poem is the result of that.

I read an interesting article in a U.K. newspaper called Daily Mail yesterday about homosexual animals. It recounted two true stories, the first about two retired greyhounds who regularly 'enjoyed one another' and showed no interested in bitches in season. The second was a ram who 'played' with his fellow rams but much to the farmers shagrin would not serve a single yew in season.
So what is it that makes anything an alternative to the norm. Seems most of us are 'straight' by nature, nurture and design but wtf happened to the animals i mentioned.
I'm sure your piece is tongue in cheek. Are you ready for the feminist backlash?

        Hello FrankJIII,

A brilliant and thought provoking poem that certainly challenges our assumptions and pre - conceived ideas on gender.

Read my poem on Jane Fonda an actress who has certainly challenged people's assumptions on what Hollywood stars are supposed to be particularly when they are older.

        Keep writing FineB
