Imagine Us in Heaven

Aria Valentine

I never asked for this.

The sands are always shifting,

And the bits of beach glass glitter

As they fight for incandescent dominance

With the waves and the sunlight.

I pick up a handful of the beach,

And let it fall through my fingers.

It always gets stuck under my nails,

But this time around, I don't mind.

Grains of sand are so trivial

Isolated from the expanse of the beach.

I never would have chosen to be like this.

The water is liquid glass,

As blue-green as your eyes at midday

But half as intense.

Did you rob the ocean of it's brilliance?

Why did you give the beach glass

A chance to compete?

Bright, yes, but sharp and cruel.

Were you scared of the ocean's kindness?

Was her cool and calm too discordant

With the tumult you've come to know?

Perhaps you just needed to feel powerful,

no matter the cost.

Imagine us in Heaven, standing at it's gates.

You spent your whole life trying to feel big,

And yet here you are,

Too small to reach the handle.

  • Comment from author about the poem: This is about an exchange I had, where (to put it bluntly), I was harassed for my identity. It was a way of unpacking what had happened and examining what would make somebody act the way that person acted towards me. (And, perhaps, some indulgent speculation about the consequences.)
