Apprehensively extend unsteady fingers
confirm externalization of the beat in my ears.
Heat waves tighten my lungs in hollow breaths
and quick sanded is the lock on my knees.
The moment approaches with inescapable aura
trapped on my own irrevocable stubbornness
my body ignored in the ambition to be tamed
this frightened drum that sounds the rhythm of life.
I focus on the increasingly distant instant
in which I look back at this nonsensical state
and laugh at my disproportionate frail disgrace.
Eyes travel to fruitful ground of conquest
that requires dominance over this, a test
which is the control of our spirits vehicle.

GOOD AFTERNOON CHRIS ~ Welcome to MPS it is an empathetic site which works by mutual interaction ! I share this site with ANGELA who is my Fiancee. Thanks for your first Poem ~ elegant in Structure and interesting in Subject ~ ANTICIPATION PHOBIA !
It is a trait we all share *Fear of the Unknown* A new Town ~ A new Job ~ a new Relationship etc etc ! We have faced NEW situations in the past (and survived) but (Verse 1.) one is always APPREHENSIVE ! V 2. In such novel situations the *Rhythm of Life* always accelerates & intensifies ~ c'est la Vie ! V 3. Yes we do laugh (inwardly) at our disproportionate inability to cope ? V 4. We resolve to think outside the BOX and beyond our *Fear of Anticipation* to the *Fruitful Ground of Conquest* AMEN.
Thanks for a very thought provoking Poem ! MORE PLEASE !
Yours ANGELA & BRIAN !
Please check our site ~ Thanks !
I like that "Anticipation phobia", could have been a better title. Thanks.
Well written and with more than a ring of truth to it.. anticipatory anxiety is like the proverbial double edged sword.. in certain instances it can actually help one perform well or better.. in others and particularly prior to an event, situation or circumstance, anticipatory anxiety can be variously debilitating..... but then you obviously know that already, either from personal experience or of knowing another or others who suffer similarly.... Oh' I very nearly forgot, and welcome to my poetic side
Neville
Neville, I believe there are several stages. The first of anticipation is mostly fear and your body trying to convince you to stop. The second... well that will have to be my poem now, won't it? 😉
well what are you waiting for.. get ya pen out
As promised (it was really your idea): https://mypoeticside.com/show-poem-112945
almost a collab then (lol)...
Indeed. Success might be 10% inspiration and 90% work, but those 10% bring it home like no amount of work would.
Stage 3 of stress: "wave of relief" https://mypoeticside.com/show-poem-113037 and with it I think I am done on the subject (until I feel it again) 🙂
A fine first posting here on MPS and welcome Chris - - the write raises questions of when anticipation favours our choices and when not does it bring harm to our rhythm of life. I look forward to reading more of your work.
I never know there was some much eloquence in anticipation - phobic, fearful, or positively looking forward types! (lol).
Well, sounds better than saying 'I was just a bit unsure of what would happen'! (heehee).
As Neville says 'Anticipatory anxiety can be very debilitating'. Especially if I'm about to sing. Who can bear it?! heehee.
Anticipation can either be pleasant or a danger to health - well expressed Chris is the feel of beginnings we cannot stop......... welcome to this friendly site.
