Was cloudless by that southern sea
The day she swore she'd marry me.
But biting, bitter breeze was blowing
And there was just no way of knowing
That she was messing with my mind,
That kisses could be so unkind
Bestowed beneath a blissful bower
At such a faithless, fateful hour.
Was raining when she drove away
And I knew then she'd start to stray
That all her smiles and warm embracing
Was just a dream I had been chasing
That I was facing life alone
Because her heart was made of stone.
The sun was setting when she rang me
To ask me for my lonely latchkey.

- Comment from author about the poem: This is the poem I would have written many years ago when my true love left me. I dedicate it now to all those who have been unlucky in love and have been forced to join the noble army of the brokenhearted. I know how you feel, but don't give up hope. My long lost love returned to me after 32 years, i.e. after a lifetime apart!
