I often ponder when alone
About what used to be
When life was ever giving
When I was young and free

Those days have long since gone
In a blink of just an eye
Oh I wish they would come back again
Like the sun that lights the sky

Now that time has aged me so
How much I wished I’d done
The past seemed so distant now
Oh ,when I was young .

This type of poem suits me fine. I like rhyme and rhythm plus the story which inspired the words. I think well done!
