Unbound Reality (Re-write)

Tom Wood

While the windows shook and swung

And I,

Long since It had begun

Couldn’t cry

The low hanging ceiling

Amusing the dancing shadows

Creeped me to believing

Something was out in the snow

I picked up my volume

Of that forgotten lore

That nasty thing covered in perfume

Reminding me of Lenore

Why my suspicions were itching

And the fire crackling lightly implored

But my hand, it solemnly twitching

When foul beast tapped on door

With great surprise

I leaped into the air

I wondered if it was my imaginations lies

But shouted, out of fear, “Who’s there?”

The shadows grew denser

And the windows howled loudly

Leaving only to me one answer

With this intruder, knocking proudly

“Open the door!” I shrieked

For no man, deserved this wait, in his safe haven

When the door swung open, and I got a peak

At a small, black, raven

I dropped  to my knees

The laughter filled the air

“I would like, for you, to please

Leave my house, and go to freeze out there!”

He didn’t budge

He stood and stared

Like he held a grudge

He could sense I was scared

He startled me

This black foul of night

I felt the presence of Lenore come and leave

I felt my heart, alone, ignite

This bird, it seemed, was silent

It never let out a roar

But when spoke it, you could taste the violent

Murmur of “Nevermore”

I knew what he meant

I knew why he had come

I knew of him I had sent

My mind was unspeakably numb

I woke in my chair, my mind, me forsaken

The thought of Lenore in my brain engraven

I sighed, forever It had taken

The crested equivalent of me, a raven

  • Comment from author about the poem: This is very obviously not an original idea, but I absolutely love "The Raven", so I decided I would try to rewrite a little of it in my style :)
