For the Love of Words

spiritualwanderer

I watch the teleprompter that is in my head.

It’s not a regular teleprompter with words and such,

But a beautiful collection of thought-pictures.

It is messy, but it is mine,

So I like it in any condition.

The absolute value of both -1 and +1 are both “1” just the same.

If you are confused, the teleprompter will explain:

Math > words.

…now I am confused.

Words are confusing.

What do they mean?

Never the exact same thing.

This collection of words may evoke a feeling,

In you,

In me.

Our feelings very rarely align,

But so does our perception.

“To you, what does that cloud look like?

“An alligator? A 3-headed monster?"

You giggle, “an elevator,”

And, for what it’s worth, I concur.

But the truth—the absolute truth,

Is that I saw it as “a saber-toothed,”

And you saw “a tiger.”

We’re both liars.

But we like it better

To have fun together.

Your teleprompter I admire,

Your imagination captures my admiration (?)

You + me = happy

  • Comment from author about the poem: I wrote this with several people in mind, but the meaning of the poem surpasses relationships. This is about how, when you focus on the thoughts that flow in and out of your mind, you realize that whatever words pop up can be interpreted in different ways, perhaps even by yourself. This is just like when you watch clouds next to someone else. Even if you have the same words in your head or visually see the same shapes of clouds, words make communication more difficult sometimes. Because we all have different life experiences, biases, etc, our perception of the world is never the same as that of anyone else. At the time, I had been contemplating whether or not it is ever okay to tell a white lie. I decided that, if it is out of love and in true jest, it can be simpler to say something that is not completely true. The intention is what matters, and both parties will feel the energy of love more strongly than any sensory information.
