The Stalker

daydreaming

You’re looking over your shoulder
My shadow follows your footsteps
Compulsive desires have taken me over
You hide through the crowds hoping it’s over.

My presence is making you wonder
Is he following me at this very moment?
You hope that in time I will give up this fight
But there’s a chance I may get you tonight.

The one thing I want you to know
My obsession won’t let you go
I will follow wherever you go
You’re the one I’ve been looking for.

I confess I can’t stand being alone
I don’t want to be on my own
Unwanted love, like it or not
I need you more than you’ll ever know.

Don’t run away and come to me
Would you slow down if I say please?
I need to put my mind at ease
It’s time I live my fantasies.

Accept my plea and let me in
I’m not as bad as you may think
Just give me a chance and you will see
The goal will justify the means.

Accept your fate, conquer your fears
No need to cry, contain your tears
I’ll never hurt what I hold dear
But I won’t stop, let’s make that clear.

  • Comment from author about the poem: A friend has been stalked by a neighbor since they were teenagers. He is harmless but she feels very uncomfortable around him. He is in love with her. He leaves flowers at her doorsteps. He tries to talk to her every time he sees her. And he watches her through his windows every night. This poem tries to capture the way he feels: hopeless by wanting someone that will never want him. A devastating blow to one’s self esteem. Most people move on. Others can overcome the compulsive attraction.
