My Lighthouse

chrisbaker07

A lighthouse is a proud old creature,
It stands the test of time; battered by wind and rain yet seemingly indestructible.
It shines through the clouds as a beacon of hope and salvation for ships of all sizes.

No matter what life and the elements have thrown at you, a thought for yourself comes second.
Second to a natural, unselfish desire to befriend, love and protect.
Even those vessels that were unknown or seemingly undeserving felt your overwhelming presence.

With such amazing design and beauty, It's no wonder that your legacy stretches far and wide,
As with any great monument comes the enormous pride that is felt by all those who love you,
Most of which can say without thinking hard that you have kept them away from the jagged rocks below that seem so precariously close.

It has come as such a shock to see your walls tumble.
And now that you're gone we will have to look elsewhere for a light to protect and guide us, as you have.
One that shines as strongly or as brightly will never be seen again.

The world has truly lost of of its wonders;
But the power you had will never be forgotten.

  • Comment from author about the poem: I wrote this poem when my Grandmother died nearly ten years ago to read at her funeral. Coming up to the ten year anniversary of her passing, I am looking to share it with others in the hope that they might recognise something in one of their loved ones and it may be read during difficult times for others as it was at my Nana’s funeral.

    Your beautiful poem reminded me of someone. So I have saved it, to read again when I think of them. We truly do lose some wonderful kind people. This was such a lovely tribute to someone who clearly meant so much to you. I thank you for allowing others to read your kind words. It is a great write
