Red Riding Hood met with the wolf

Who dazzled her with his great tooth,

She was moved to suggest

That he take off his vest,

And tarry awhile 'neath her roof.

  • Comment from author about the poem: A limerick, apparently innocent until you realise who the wolf actually is, and where Red Riding Hoods roof is situated (in the woods, of course). Death, sex and innocence: all roads lead to Hollywood. I wonder who thought up the name Sunset Boulevard. Why not 42nd Street? Probably a sudden poetic aberration. And, talking of aberrations...

    My oh my what big eyes you have..... all the better for seeing you with...... my oh my what big hands you have..... all the better for caressing you with..... Oh my god no! ... that's way too big ..... put it away!!!

      The presuppositions of fairy stories are deeply rooted. No doubt many will, or have been, subject to suppression or modification to conform to glib ideas about democracy and equality: that goes along with the general impoverishment of society by standardisation. But, happily, whatever lies closest to the roots of humanity will survive.
