Photographic Reminiscence

Tevis

Here they come,

Here they come,

Images spinning 'round my head,

As I'm lying on my bed,

What to do,

What to think,

As slowly, adieu,

Everything begins to shrink,

A dream,

A recollection,

A spitting image of replication,

I'm overtaken,

By the sight of the shaken,

And the sight of the newlywed,

I see it, the image,

The one I dread,

Approaching and rising,

Like that of the undead,

In the corner,

On the wall,

As I soon begin to fall,

A pane of glass standing tall,

I look out,

And am shocked to see,

The world spinning all around me,

My breathing slows,

The serenity shows,

That nature only grows,

I hear a shriek,

And look awry,

Only to hear a bone-chilling cry,

My legs take action,

I surpass relaxation,

My heart is pumping,

I see a light,

I begin jumping,

I shout with joy,

Yet it was but a ploy,

For when I turned I saw a boy,

Eyes of fire,

An air of mist,

He rose in the air and off I was whisked,

I lost the place that I so missed,

I sought my life,

I ran from pain,

But arrive here without gain,

The monsters close in,

They cut the distance,

I wake and see,

The value of photo reminiscence.

  • Comment from author about the poem: This poem was one of the first serious and concentrated poems I did. There was a lot of time put into making sure the rhythm and rhyme were put in order and sounded good. This story is not meant to be personal but it captures small parts of myself within it. It captures the life of a character with a photo memory, or how I put it "photo reminiscence." It takes in the advantages, disadvantages, and vividity of this type of recollection. It takes on a nightmarish scene with small breaks of peace and remembrance of the "good times" and the "place I (the character) once missed." I think the best way to capture it is a nightmarish memory that encaptures the subject and overwhelms them constantly due to a certain event.
