Body

Tia Davis/テイア

My body was once seen as a masterpiece

But only for my eyes to see

Abstract art with my name on it

Yet somehow people think they own it

Have thoughts even when my shirt collar is all the way at the top of my neck

Some even have the nerves to tell you what they think

What they want with your body

They think its a game

Like I'm a toy that’s in a box with bold letters

Shouting play

As if I’m made of plastic they feel they can mold

As if I'm your barbie you don’t need permission to hold

I am worth more than my body

My brain my heart is what’s truly worth more

Only if you can see it

Other than my breast that screams to you

Want me more

I swear if I had an option

For what I want people to see first

I would choose my brain

Because my body is my shell just protecting the most valuable things

Yet no one can see the me that actually explains me

But yet they see my body which is only skin deep

Tia, this piece is haunting. First I see the photo of you, making a strong impression of one who is both physically handsome and very savvy. As I experience the poem, the product of your mind acting though your body, I am caught flat-footed by your plea for us to know you first by your brain. By the end of the poem I feel I have in fact been introduced to Tia the brain. Thank you.
