Still You Persist

jes

How do I overcome this?

When I see your eyes in all I do?

Worried when I wake to take a trembling step

And ascend the stairs slowly, holding tightly

How do I get past?

When ghosts of what we were and did linger by cabinet and door

And in that way implore

Me to tarry in the sense that lies there only further to haunt,

Yet I continue my move by trinket and cloth I cannot consign to vault

Where all that was is buried, there forever to call out while I push back.

We didn't mean this way, for you hadn't me in mind

When first we connected, and you said and did

Things I now complain I cannot forget are etched in my heart.

You couldn't have known all that was could be all that tears

At a being so willing to welcome, once.

How do I overcome this?

What concludes in finality cannot be the satisfaction also for this.

Nor will tomorrow diverge enough by itself for time to work its way,

And replacing it all with something, someone other

Reduces me to shame for knowing that otherwise

I may not . . . .
