silent beaks speak,
tucked away for now,
no longer touched,
waiting for a delivery,
no mother in sight,
she’s been detained,
her maternal warmth absent,
a tragedy of touchlessness.
wait, what could be worse?
human babies in a hotel room,
gathered together, ‘products’ of surrogates,
flown in like commodities,
pending, to be packaged and delivered,
alone, no home, bereft of parents,
touch, a snuggle, a reassuring Whisper.
silent beaks speak.

- Comment from author about the poem: “Stranded Babies, Hurting Moms: COVID-19 Crisis Highlights Problems with Surrogacy“ by Lauretta Brown. National Catholic Register, June 7 - 20, 2020: “...shows an improvised children’s room and 46 crying babies, deprived of maternal touch, parental warmth, selfless care, much-needed love, but are seen as a purchased product for which the buyer did not come. Such a demonstration of contempt for the human person and his dignity is unacceptable.” - [ ] The photo is from a bird’s nest in my backyard. A nest built by a pair of cardinals, one bright red and the other a sort of grayish red. When I carefully peer into the nest I find the three chicks pictured, completely silent but with beaks wide open. I take it as a silent symbol of neediness, complete dependency upon someone greater than what they now are in infancy, hopefully benevolent, in a perfect world their biological parents, their true family.

Photo not here - or you just uploading it now? There's a debugging message thingy on here at time - go away bug! lol.
No the photo wouldn’t load. Too bad these were quite the chicks! Open, silent beaks and all. Thanks for stopping by O.
