The Impossible Dream

Accidental Poet

Just a boy was I

A young boy

With no knowledge of love

But soon to own that joy

Without knowing why

I fell in love with a girl

To me, a girl beyond compare

The prettiest in the world

Her smile as Cupid’s arrow

To the core of my heart

To begin my life’s elation

Of utmost beautiful art

But soon my ultimate prize

Would move far away

Leaving me all alone

To live my life another way

Over many years

I’ve wondered why

Why she came into my life

Did I fall victim to a lie?

But a lie dissected

Under my heart’s microscope

If this love is wrong

It would have washed away with soap

I’ve always known

I’ll never see her again

So why do I hold on?

Without even a trace of pain

To love her

Till my time is up

To some an impossible dream

But I’ll not give up

To go the distance

Proving at least to myself

I fell in love with the very best

No room for anyone else

And that’s how I roll

To reach for my life’s dream

My heart’s quest for love

The impossible dream

  • Comment from author about the poem: A few days ago, I listened to this song by Jim Nabors. And I was so amazed that I had to listen to it a second time. Suddenly I realized how for me, the song relates to why I’ve held onto my first love of Sharon for so long. I know most people in my situation would have given up on that first love many years ago soon after she went away. But this song made me realize that I don’t need anyone other than Sharon in my heart. Many people know when they meet the right person in their life and that person is “the one”. I knew a very long time ago that Sharon would be the one girl for me. But life tells you to look for someone else to be the one. I knew I couldn’t live my life according to those rules. In a letter I put in her 8th grade school locker in 1971 just before she moved away, I told her I’d always love her. And I knew then that I’d never go back on my word. I meant it then and still today 49 years later. So, this song exemplifies why I hold onto the feelings I have for Sharon. I know many would see it differently, but loving one woman for the rest of my life is my Impossible Dream. I hope this explains why I love Sharon as I do and why I write poetry for her. I wrote this poem after listening to this song. Thank you for reading and understanding. - AP.

I was captivated by both the commentary and the poem - so touching and so so sad. Superb work.

Aww such awesome poem on a first love from so long ago, an appealing way you express it, the story does make us curious, why can't you find ,meet and win her love now. Perhaps she could read this poem? I was admiring the microscope stanza most but the entire poem is romantic and fantasy like. Kudos.

Plz do read and comment my newest poem too. Thanks.
