NIGHTLY THOUGHTS IN AN EASTERN MORNING

Ifeanyichukwu

          Vantaged:

from where I sit gazing
my window talks to me,
and I see it,
forlorn, misty and dark
shades all grave and gloomy
of nature
starring: trees, skies and stars.

             Even the echoes -
waft through
as emissaries,
chorusing in the nightly waves
from a vigil near by
adulation to heavens.

             That I lie awake,
this I must
and dance with my pen
in this moonless night.

            Homeland:
pavement of a fallen country,
once great but died -
weary and wretched,
laid waste and
leaving behind,
bewitched, orphaned toddlers.
Yes! Even so,
strangers in their own lands
that must seek refuge
in foreign cities.

              Albatross:
Strange!
Such is the new name of my nation
like beads,
we wear you round our necks
to the admiration
of the Ancient Mariner,
who scorns,
and takes to sea;
our hopes and dreams and creed
tag along
in an endless swimming tide.
