WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF WASPS ? ~ AN AFFIRMATIVE PANTOUM !

ANGELA & BRIAN

WASPS # And We don*t mean White Anglo-Saxon Protestants ~ They are a very different Breed ! Wasps are insects of the order VESPIDAE and they are disliked because they STING if challenged ! But this is their defence mechanism in a Biosphere that is *Red in Tooth & Claw* and only the fittest survive !  I (Brian) studied ECOLOGY with the Open University and now appreciate that WASPS ~ like all living creatures ~ have a part to play in the complex *Web of Life* in the BIOSPHERE !  This includes Pollination - Predation & Parasitism. They also store Yeast in the Winter for the Spring Grapes. So next time you meet a WASP ~ see it as an asset and even if it gives you a STING ~ DON*T KILL IT !  Love Angela ๐Ÿงก Brian ๐Ÿ’™

WHY are WASPS considered as a Nasty Pest ?

They always plague our Brunch & Lunch al fresco

We panic when WASP lands on our Chest

Or  on the tasty roll we bought from TESCO !

They always plague our Brunch & Lunch al fresco

To share the sugar on our Fritter

Or on the tasty roll we bought from TESCO

But that*s no reason ~ for to kill the Critter !

To share the sugar on our Fritter

To help them carry out their good Vocation

But that*s no reason ~ for to kill the Critter

Pollination & Predation !

To help them carry out their good Vocation

Without WASPS ~ then pests our FIGS would eat

Pollination & Predation

FIGS are delicious ~ green ones are a treat !

Without WASPS ~ then pests our FIGS would eat

We panic when a WASP lands on our Chest

FIGS are delicious ~ green ones are a treat

WHY are WASPS considered as a Nasty Pest ?

A Wasps Nest is a masterpiece of High Rise Flat Engineering made of Wood !  Like a Honeycomb each cell is hexagonal to give it extra strength. This structure is used in Aircraft Wings to combine strength with lightness. The trouble is most people only see the intrinsic Inner Beauty of a Wasps Nest when they have destroyed it with a stick ~ And then its too late. If we don*t learn to live in Harmony with Nature ~ Then the Human Race will ultimately destroy itself ! Consider the WASP and be WISE !

NOTE ADDED SIX HOURS AFTER PUBLICATION ~ As I anticipated most of the comments received to date have been *I come to BURY WASPY not to PRAISE HIM*  In some ways my POEM was a reply to NEVILLES *Anti Wasp Ode* of a few days ago !  Ironically - after I had posted my Poem there was an article in Todays *I* by an Ecologist Dr James Dyke - eulogising the WASP. He outlined the *Value of the Wasp to Farmers etc* much as I have done - and stressed the importance of Homo Sapiens living in Harmony with the Natural World !  The majority of us live in Cities where Nature is abhorred except for a few Totem Trees & pampered Pooches & Moggies !  Wasps inhabited Planet Earth long before MAN and will still be here long after MAN is extinct - Please treat them with the respect they deserve !

Oh yes, wasps do exist for a reason. They provide us with a very satisfying little crunching noise as you tread them underfoot.
I had a wasps nest in the soil beneath my front hedgerow last year and they were such a pest. I built wasp traps as per youtube instructions which the wasps ignored and instead those traps filled to overflowing with flies.
Back in the nineties the garage became home to an amazing nest hanging from the roof beams. The destroyer man said it was the largest he had ever seen.... but a few puffs of his amazing chemicals and all was quiet.

GOOD AFERNOON DUSK ~ The problem is we only see them as intruders on our Picnics and our homes - and if we annoy them - They sting us. However it is US who are the intruders and we build homes & gardens on their territory. All they want is a bit of sugar to stay alive ! On picnics Angela & I take a piece of Fruit & a Donut for the wasps & they dont bother US. Its the same with Spiders - they are very imortant predators - people are scared of them - so they kill them. Unless we learn to share the Planet with All Nature the consequences will be disastrous. Global Warming is a case in point. Thanks for your comment !

Peace & Joy to You & Yours
      Yours Angela & Brian ! !

You know what, I agree with everything you wrote there. But I clash with wasps. Like lion and hyena, me and wasp cannot live together. Yes, as the sentient one i know i'm in control of that but it's like a base instinct.
I avoid killing spiders, but base instinct is in the mix, spiders make the hair on my back / shoulders stand on end.

How are you my friends? This is a great write and very informative. Still, I feel that we are good enough friends for me to be honest with you. I generally leave wasps alone. In fact in is quite foolish to try and kill one by yourself. Still, when they become to much of a nuisance, and may harm others, then they must go. Wasps are very important creatures, yes. Nevertheless, they can cause harm to others.
        (Sigh)
        Sadly, such is life.
Again, this a very good informative piece.
        Persistence is key
