we had grapevines, four separate trunks
one for each nuclear member
and when the gloom of Winter, surrendered
we would compete, for that sweetest - title
although, when looking back
I can’t recall
their taste or appearance, on a plate
in my mind’s idyllic childhood scenes, they remain
enticingly delectable images
forever glistening
with uncorrupted expectation: waiting
fated to remain unpicked, never manhandled
and subjected to that inevitability - of disappointment’s
ravenous grip
