He Remembers that We are Dust

Gary Edward Geraci

(Psalm 103:14)

So soon to shun the illicit?

The sooner the better!

Sins like stones burden hearts,

Sinking depths, places of

Stark bleakness, unaware

Of the power to

Cast away - not mine but His.

Ah, those who’ve never asked,

Who wouldn’t hope!

A whole life lived,

Weighted down, sluggish,

Playing the same loop

Over and over in the head:

He never rose,

He never rose,

He never rose.

  • Comment from author about the poem: He rose from the dead! The final repetition is inspired by the story of American poet Emily Dickinson’s schooling at Mount Holyoke Female Seminary. Despite all her brilliance and poetic acumen, she could never bring herself to believe in the resurrection of Jesus Christ. “Students were organized into one of three groups: those who professed, those who hoped to and those who were without hope. Dickinson was among eighty without hope when she entered and was among twenty-nine who remained so by the end of the year. She wrote her friend Abiah Root, “There is a great deal of religious interest here and many are flocking to the ark of safety. I have not yet given up to the claims of Christ, but trust I am not entirely thoughtless on so important & serious a subject” source of quote https://www.emilydickinsonmuseum.org/emily-dickinson/biography/special-topics/emily-dickinsons-schooling-mount-holyoke-female-seminary/

You and I, and many other, believes He did rise! Methinks so. A pity if she never came to believe.
Some say, not humbly: 'Who you calling dust; or a worm; or even, a sheep?' Baaa!
Yet I read of a story - one recovered from an accident - yet he said it made him a stronger atheist. Doh!

I wonder if the poor fellow had a near death experience - which by the way - are cited by some (near death experiences) as an additional “motive of credibility” in favor of an afterlife! Thanks for your read and always entertaining commentary especially your accounts of life in the pews in Great Britain.

The guy did have some accident or something. But no, some won't believe. Bit of a druggie link too, as he was on a squeaky-clean television show, then banned when found out.
You have many pews there in USA?! 'Don't you dare sit in MY pew', some may think. Of course they won't actually SAY so the person. Rather huff and puff and look disgruntled. There are cushions in some places, if botty can't stand the wooden pews too long! Now me next book: 'Stories From UK Pews' written from the pews viewpoint!
