Doctor Donkirsity

Gary Edward Geraci

Doctor Donkirsity, Dean of Diversity,

Throws books into boxes, into buses with boxes,

With witch like precision, which books - his decision,

And cleanses the library of “all lies and offenses!”

Next, “to the restrooms!” no rest ‘till they’re genderless,

Tears “GIRLS” from the wall where the boys aren’t permitted,

An eye for equality, sameness, and par, he

Rips “BOYS” from the stalls where the girls aren’t admitted.

Subjects like history - he wants them rewritten;

He’ll choose the science that bolsters his viewpoints; sports

Will be played, everyone wins and takes home a trophy

Rather than homework assignments that rob home comforts.

“Countries should care for its citizens and subjects,

Treating all the same way regardless their talent;

Let’s rid ourselves of religion, superstition too;

With equal pay and outcomes who needs the gallant?

“Sure some will resist but they can be cancelled;

Coaxed into wearing masks? The masses followed!

We closed down their Masses and told them to stay home,

Feeding their stomachs they opened wide and swallowed!”

  • Comment from author about the poem: Tsk, tsk, tsk .... My opening line is inspired by Mr. Morris McGurk and his “The Circus McGurkus!” both from the rich imagination of Dr. Seuss, the Doctor of the hypnotic, anapestic tetrameter (uuS - “not a creature was stirring not even a mouse” Clement Clarke Moore) of which I grew up with as a child. My poem is written in a dominant dactyl tetrameter (Suu) with ABCB, end rhymes.

    Satire, Gary? Last stanza seems at odds though - surely something had to be done....

      Yes, a bit of humor too, Dave. I’ve added a line or two in the author’s comments section that may help shed some light on the excesses I mock in the poem. Recall, several books written by the children’s author Dr. Seuss were recently pulled from the shelves as some parts of them were deemed offensive yet the Grammy’s this year, broadcast into millions of homes with young viewers, featured writhing women on an oversized bed sliding down poles and scenes glorifying looting and rioting in the name of social justice. Yes indeed and thank God speech is still free in America.

        So many issues there:
        ‘Politically Correct’ language;
        The depiction of violence rather than respectful non exploitative sexuality;
        The role of competition in a late capitalist society;
        Completely free speech - does it and should it occur everywhere…?
        I could argue and sometimes agree on each and every one of those, but I don’t think I’ve got the stamina any longer…..
        Good to throw them up to stimulate thought though.

        I too, see
        that disparity you refer to..
        modernity's all-progressive age, where change equates: what suits us best
        and alleviates that latest guilt trip, highlighted by tabloid outrage..
        when ambition for equality and minority representation: dictates
        we dismiss morality as a que to common decency of that civility, we've come to take for granted
        we walk that same tightrope all dictator's and tyrant's fell - off,
        the one where
        'their actions are justified, by their perceived: distorted vision, of the greater good'..
        then again, we wouldn't be human if we didn't copy the same cyclical mistakes we inherited, as our starting-line of 'consequence'...

          I fear you are correct LB; God help us all. Thank you for stopping by - always insightful commentary.
