Song of Flowers

Jo March

To see my dreams on fogged-out screens

To hear the windblown songs of flowers

To feel the muted beats of quaking hearts

In drum roll echoes of my aging world

While clasping my warm hand in yours

You are my friend and please don’t forget

I am yours and so will always be…

Go on and hold my graceful word

Spoken in a raspy whisper for

Good luck on hoar-capped dandelions

Sun-like flowers aging just like me

Hiding in fleece-soft grass

Away from butter-golden rays

Now circled by the stubby bumblebee

Now parachuting in their sylph-like bristles

I will give you ringing bells my friend

At once to shut off my anxiety

At last to thaw frost-bitten hearts

To feel again part of one rowdy family

Trusting that death is just a vapid myth

Let me drop my shining word

Ripple-like in your cool pool

Of happy consciousness

While I stand and toss baked stones

Hot-potato-like in blue ink water

Let me give you songs of flowers

Or watch you chase wandering winds

While I sit melting sugar dreams

Inside my cup of marshmallow lather

In darkling twilight through chalk-dusted doors

Let me but offer loud resounding words

Echoing with bell-like cadence

Or press our soft warm hands together

Or stand in life’s circle center-stage

One you and I cannot disturb

May you be blessed my dear friend

My trusted friend as you move on

Blessed for a million lives from now

By winds that blow from east to west

And by the dreaming angels as you go

Bye my friend bye…

  • Comment from author about the poem: The idea for this poem came from a short piece I wrote as a child (I will give you sound of bells and songs flowers blowing of wind... And you will go with these words. You are my friend and I am your friend. Bye, my friend, Bye.)
