Find Something Extraordinary - A poem by Asha Loon

Asha Loon

If you asked the people where she had gone they would tell you they just did not know.

That she slipped away one evening without a trace,

That she just “needed” to go.

She had never been one for staying still,

“She had a hurricane in her chest,” they would say.

She never cared for a life where alarm clocks and crossed out calendars

Were all there ever was to a day.

So she left.

With one suitcase.

It was purple, they said.

She left,

With one suitcase and a galaxy in her head.

She left,

And never said a word to anyone

About where she was going to go,

As she knew if she did,

She would have to return

To the world of “yes” and “no.”

They said she was tired of the waiting,

Of the sitting,

Of the clocks,

She was tired of the cycle that never seemed to stop.

They say she wanted to find something extraordinary -

Something so real, so true and rare

That people would struggle to put it into words,

Something so bright, they would squint their eyes at the glare.

So she left,

That place of right and wrong.

And instead, was taught by the rivers to sing her own song.

She would dance on the rooftops until there wasn’t much of a difference between her body and her mind,

And lived behind the glass of every cracked mirror that you will ever find.

I remember seeing her before she left,

You could tell she needed to go.

She’d sigh and frown and stare at the ground

But tried not to let the hurricane show.

But I knew that she was aching,

I knew her chest was tight.

So she left,

Away on that invisible train that only ran at night.

I hope that wherever she is now,

she‘s found what she was searching for.

I hope she feels the freedom in her bones

that she never did before.

And even if she doesn’t yet,

I hope she never gives up.

Because I know there’s a place for her somewhere,

Where she truly feels enough.

And even though she doubted that anyone did,

I thought the hurricane was a beautiful thing.

And I know that one day she’ll find out what is extraordinary -

Something. Anything.

Everything.
