the waiting

rebmasters

Stretched beneath a
three dimensional, opalescent sky,
the sound of waves breaking,
I wondered how long we had left.

I never think of what’s ahead;
preferring each infinitesimal
moment with you instead.

We lie in bed
together in darkness
& whisper pretend dreams
before real ones
crash in,
like waves obliterating hearts
drawn on changeable sand.

I will wait silently
for your return,
like the dry sea bed
when the water recedes:
starting to crack before
you rush over me just once more;
Your salt settles onto my skin
& lips.

I will wait on
this dream-like coast;
I seem to see the brilliant blue sky
before I even open my awed eyes.
I feel I can see the curve of the Earth,
but will never know what’s beyond,
like the end of a radiant rainbow
I’m a fool for chasing.

Still, the waiting;
the hardest & best part
of you & me
