Bukowski

Notice of absence from Robert Haigh
Will be absent from MPS for a week or so. Too many other things to do right now. See you all soon. Take care ~ Robert

I read some Bukowski poems today;
He often had something compelling to say.
With imagery soaring as high as a kite!
Love him or loathe him, he knew how to write!
Somewhat prolific, and often terrific!
Not just a writer, but also a fighter!
He could be quite coarse, and unrefined,
But clearly he had a remarkable mind.
A scruff and a slob, with a menial job,
It's almost as if he aimed low in life;
But his words cut through like a whetted knife!
Just one thing really left to say:
Go read some Bukowski poems today!

Thank you, dear poet. I appreciate your comment.

Dear Robert, although Charles Bukowski, was somewhat at times extremely crude he was infact and is one of my favourite poets, his work has inspired me even recently in my work, i love the realism in his vision no matter who he offended he had the right attitude to turning peoples heads with his work simply because he believed in what he wrote, always a great debate to be had when speaking of him. a fabulous and very well written dedication. love this.

which by the way, was what made him quite sexy. shhh don't tell a soul that i said so.

        • Robert Haigh

Bukowski was certainly an interesting and charismatic character. Not classically handsome by any means, yet his rugged looks were very appealing to many women. He also had the reputation of being a tough guy. He was a prize-fighter at one time. And on top of all that, he was a prolific, and sometimes great, writer. He wrote many novels as well as thousands of poems. "Post Office" is one of my favourite novels of all time. Thank you for your most interesting comments, Teddy!

Will I swoon if I read some of his poems? Can I risk it?! heehee.

          • Robert Haigh

Will you swoon, Orchi? It depends on whether you've ever read any of his work, I would say. Bukowski could often be crude and some people did take offence. But he did have a way with words (and the ladies!). I'd risk one eye if I were you!

Charles Bukowski was quite a character and I agree that he was charismatic also. He had another side which I preferred and that is a spiritual side. He had a rough exterior, nobody can deny that, yet he had an inner light which only a select few were able to see. This is my favourite quote of his: “those who escape hell however never talk about it and nothing much bothers them after that.” I have quoted it often. Thank you, for sharing your outstanding tribute to a noteworthy writer, the likes of whom we won't see again. Thank you, Robert... Lovely work!

            • Robert Haigh

Thank you for your well thought out comment, Marie. Yes, Bukowski was a one-off talent. Many have tried to copy his deceptively simple style, but they almost always lack the subtleties and nuances of Bukowski\'s original work.

              • Marie

Most welcome, Robert and yes, I agree with you one hundred percent. Wishing you a very Happy Autumn Equinox, I send you all the many and wonderful blessings of Autumn...

Can see why. I am reading "Love is a Dog From Hell" Raw stuff.

                  • Fay Slimm.

Am inspired by your excellent tribute to read again some work by the poet I thought an inspiration long ages ago. Thanks for the suggestion Robert.

                    • Robert Haigh

My pleasure, Fay. There are many wonderful poetry collections out there, catering for all tastes.
As with music, there are many different styles and genres to enjoy. Thank you for the comment.

"I don't hate people. I just feel better when they aren't around"
                      Charles Bukowski

                      • Robert Haigh

He came up with some memorable (and some of them funny) quotes. One of my favourites is, "My ambition is handicapped by laziness." I think he did have a lazy side, but not as a writer. His output was colossal. Thanks for the visit and the quote, Neil.

I have a good poet friend that used to regularly drink & chat with him back in the US ... a great capture Robert .... Neville

                          • Robert Haigh

Wow! What interesting friends you've got Neville! Meeting Bukowski (especially for a drink and a chat) must have been mind-blowingly good! Thanks for the visit, and the comment.
