Could You Cast the First Stone?

Cygnus X-1

Present at Jerusalem’s Temple
People came to hear the wise Teacher,
Scribes and Pharisees soon sought him,
To test out this Preacher;
A woman was brought before him
Adultery was her offense,
A sin, so enormous that
She seemed to have no defence.
So, standing her in their midst
All ears were eager to hear:
What would Jesus say,
Would he make his position clear?

Well, such sort of women were stoned
According their Law,
So, would he agree to this
And carry on as centuries before?
But, bending down he began writing
With his finger in the sand
Seemingly oblivious to
Their rigid, unbending demand.

Still, they persisted questioning
Seeking to accuse the Lord,
So, straightening up he said
(With many an authoritative word)
‘Let the one who is sinless
Be the first to cast a stone.’
And, boldly bending down
Amid a muted tone
He resumed his writing
In the dusty, baked ground.
Well, it wasn’t very long that
No faultfinder was to be found
As all, one by one
Left just Jesus and the woman there;
No one could accuse,
Not one would ever dare!

Next, the Lord asked the woman
‘Where are they?
Did no one condemn you
By the things they did say?’
‘No one, sir. ’ was her reply,
(Great relief touched her heart's core)
‘Neither do I condemn you.
Go your way, practice sin no more.’

Although all this happened
Many, many years ago
We can learn from this true life lesson
Of how no one no stone did throw.
We all make many mistakes
Not one soul is sinless indeed;
Just remember that Jesus
For ALL of us he did bleed.
