LULLABY

Muhammad Jehanzeb

When you speak, my ears tremble with joy

Melancholic they become as you murmur bye

The words; the pauses; & every single note

That pitch of thy voice is my lullaby

'From base of your neck to arch of your eye'*

The blush on your face when you feel shy

As I lean into your space and kiss you

That notion of thy breath is my lullaby

From rhythm of your pulse to chime of your sapphire

And that sound of your chuckles makes me high

Your shimmering eyes as you look into mine

That expression of thy heart is my lullaby

From lift of your heel to glide of your foot

I can recognize you when you pass by

Explicit in tenor as you close in & move out

That rhyme of thy steps is my lullaby

* Adopted from Adonis's line "From base of her neck to arch of her eyelid, made a slave of me"

  • Comment from author about the poem: "Lullaby" has two affects on a child 1. The child gets a soothing affect while listening to lullaby 2. The child wants to listen to lullaby again and again.... For a person in love, the voices associated with beloved amount to lullaby. These voices, may it be voice ... or whisper of steps.... or a very feeble brush of breath.... All these voices, lover wants to listen to them again and again like a child.... And they have a soothing affect on him/her..... So I have tried to talk about all those voices associated with my beloved Hope you enjoy it
