Forgiveness

notformymother

Forgiveness is letting go of the pain you feel when you realize that it’s not longer yours to carry - and maybe it never was.

It is finding the strength within yourself to accept the apology you never received,

And forgiving yourself for not finding it sooner.

It’s gradual, and it is quiet.

It’s falling asleep with a heavy heart and waking up lighter.

It’s breaking the chains of obligation that bind you to your abuser.

It’s accepting, but not always understanding.

It’s putting yourself first for once -

Not with selfishness, but self-love.

Forgiveness is

letting

go.

  • Comment from author about the poem: Growing up with an abusive parent, I had to accept that I likely wouldn't receive external closure. This forced me to cut ties with the fantasies I procured of the apology I would never receive. I detached with love, and chose to move forward without the outside validation I sought. It's not an easy process, nor is it a straightforward one, but you'll feel a little less alone the farther you go.
