Girl in the Dark

Anna Colette

She's the physical age of a teenager
With all the average hormones and an awkward school life
A small friend group yet she could hang out with anyone.
Look at her in class,
You'd see her spacing out and hardly paying attention
Yet she understands everything on the test.
Try talking to her,
She'd say a few words but you might be the one to talk more
She's quiet; you hardly hear her say a word
Yet when she's at home, she's more outgoing.
Try not to take it personally,
She finds a safe haven in keeping quiet.
Look in her eyes,
They've seen far worse things than most people ever imagine
They show the knowledge and pain of a girl forced to grow up too fast.
She silently judges herself in the mirror with the blue that's slowly coming back from gray
Wondering why every flaw only seems to appear to her
While everyone says she's pretty and beautiful
Because she plasters on a smile to show she's okay
And most of the time, she's getting by
But sometimes it's just easier than trying to explain what's wrong
Because although she's only a teenager,
It feels like she holds the weight of the world
As things keep piling up yet she holds it together
While the days sometimes feel like an eternity
Until the darkness settles around her again
To cover every curve and welcome the silence.

  • Comment from author about the poem: This poem describes me for most of my teenage life. I was never the outgoing kid with a crowd of friends, I prefered keeping to myself and being engulfed in a book.

    sadly, you're not the first
nor will you be the last to utilise
books and stories as escape paths
from the problems of reality, but
    beyond the escape they gift
opening your mind to such varied setting's characters, and plots
helps us all to realise, the potential
    in our own lives..
(such a relatable read, thanks for sharing)
