A Tale from Tawi-Tawi

Christina Elizabeth

Drag marks left
Across the white sand
There lays an injured turtle
Waiting to be tend

The man was confused
But he cannot leave the creature be
A turtle in a shell?
No! A fair maiden he has seen!

Thankful she was
Because of him, she can live!
To show her gratitude
Her own hand, she will give

A union was forged
The two know each other's worth
A love would soon blossom
And a beautiful child to be birthed

But the child always cries,
Until their throat goes raw
The man's frustration boils over
His impatience is his greatest flaw

"No child of man! But a turtle from the sea!"
So he gave them a cursed name
The maiden returns by twilight
And knows the child isn't to blame

"By gratitude, we were bound-
And love was grown by chance!"
Her lips curled to an ugly sneer
"I assumed you weren't like this at first glance"

One more try to be given
One more attempt for him to reel them in
But he couldn't keep his anger to himself
And it resulted in one final sin

His spouse and child gone
More at home in the ocean
He had it all before
And lost it all due to his emotions
