A Promise

James Alexander

I gave you the stars at night

but you wanted the day.

I gave you music

you refused to play.

I gave you poetry

you would not read.

I gave you love

you did not heed.

I gave you colors

to paint the sky.

I gave you brushes

you would not try.

I gave you laughter

you gave me a frown.

I played romantic songs

you dismissed the sound.

I gave you visions

you could not see.

I offered you a home

but you spurned the key.

I offered you hope

but your mood  was too deep.

I promised you my heart.

A promise I loath to keep.
