Ordinary Man

He's an ordinary man who lives an ordinary life.
He works a mundane job, but has a very pretty wife.
Just what that angel sees in him he'll never understand,
But true love and devotion he always gets, first-hand.

This ordinary man is just an average working guy.
He'll never earn a fortune but you know he'll still get by.
Just one car in the driveway, reliable and sound,
Is all he can afford, but he'll always stand his ground.

When all the bills are paid, and food is on the table,
He isn't left with much, but he makes sure he's able
To buy his lovely wife some highly fashioned dresses,
Along with fine perfume, and lotion for her tresses.

She'd walk around in rags, if that's what it would take
To keep the man she loves. But let's make no mistake,
She likes the way he treats her; he loves her like he should.
This ordinary man and wife think they've got it good!

It really is the simple things that make love real, I love your title, it reminds me of an ordinary man, a song sung by Cristie Moore it's one of my all time favourites, I was.lucky to see him sing it live once. nice to see you Robert, in the world we live in is far to materialistic, I am humbly living a quiet life in the hills away from all the posh TV and i phone people lol ๐Ÿคฃ

    • Robert Haigh

This poem is not strictly autobiographical, but there are parts of me in it. I have always considered myself an ordinary man - certainly not a high flier. Christie Moore is good. I like most of the old folk singers and acoustic singer-songwriters. Thanks for reading and commenting, Teddy!

    • Fay Slimm.

An that sums up love to a tee dear Robert - -- a touching read of what is important to those who though called "ordinary" know how to exist with but little.

      • Robert Haigh

Yes indeed, Fay. Love without much money beats great riches without much love every single time. Thank you for reading and commenting!

        a beautiful dedication
        thanks for sharing, Rob
        (people - reach
        for movie scene, highlight's
        in their lives
        when its this, everyday
        rare treasure's
that gift us, our True joy's in life!'

        • Robert Haigh

Your comment is spot on, Mek! Love is the most valuable thing on earth. Thank you for reading and commenting!

I read in your words something I thought I once had. Something lost. Something it's too late to strive for.
Something which gives meaning to life and such deep rewards.

          Great writing, great message.

          • Robert Haigh

Losing love can be the saddest thing in the world. I have been through that too. My first wife was the one who had an affair, but it was she who divorced me, citing unreasonable behaviour! It all went sour for her however, when her new lover left her and went back to his wife!! Sorry you have suffered too, at the fickle hands of love. I thank you for reading, and for your comment.

Put a smile on my face.
            Mundane never hurt nobody!

            • Robert Haigh

Thank you, Nicholas. Let's raise a glass to the ordinary man.

            • Paul Bell

The ordinary man and woman usually win wars and never think anything of it. Unfortunately for us ordinary people, we typically elect the unordinary person to run the country and shaft us in the process.

              • Robert Haigh

All of what you say here is true, Paul. We always seem to pick the wrong people to lead us. But many of those leaders have built their reputation on lies. I\'ll not name names, but I think honest politicians are pretty scarce. Thanks for your comment.

                smashing Rob ..
at the end of the day, what could be better ..
at any time of day for that matter, what could be ... simple as that .. N

Thank you very much, Nev! I greatly appreciate your comment!

It sounds like this ordinary man/couple is very wealthy,..........

.....with happiness ๐Ÿ˜€ Nice little read Robert. Sometimes you just have to enjoy the simple things in life, thanks for sharing ๐Ÿ‘

                  • Robert Haigh

Yes, the simple things can be the most rewarding sometimes. Thank you, my friend.

                    Well penned dear Robert
Love isnโ€™t measured in pennies in store
But the sincere care one holds
Itโ€™s not ordinary and simplistic things
Itโ€™s just ordinary scenes with togetherness that makes the love extraordinary I think

                    • Robert Haigh

Yes, love is the thing we all need. My parents never had much money, but they were the perfect couple, with a deep love for each other - and for us children. Thank you for reading and commenting!

                    • Doggerel Dave

You have just defined 'salt of the earth' perfectly, Robert. A unit of stability in a far too fast changing world...
Great versification, it goes without saying.

                      • Robert Haigh

Thank you for your kind words, Dave. In this modern, far from perfect world, it is easy to take things for granted. My parents were down to earth people who appreciated the fundamental things in life. I'd like to think some of their thinking, and their values, rubbed off on me. Have a great day, my friend.

                      • Rozina

So warming to read this in these extraordinary times. Thank you.

Thank you for the comment, Rozina. Much appreciated.

You are right, Andy. True love can give us the strength to overcome just about anything. Thank you.

                          • Garth Rakumakoe

At times ordinary is the extraordinary, by virtue of its very simplicity. I couldnt agree more. Very well penned sir!

                            • Robert Haigh

Thank you Garth. I truly appreciate your words.
