Lying In The Dark Beside You

Charles Edward York

Lying in the dark beside you

I can clearly recall

With eyes softly closed

What tenderness

Feels like in my hands

All mine and so much like velvet

Alone no sensation

Comes close to imitating

The sunshine summer

On winter holiday in my arms.

Under the celestial shadows

I feel you so near

Even as far as

The cosmic worlds

The echoes of your heart

Beat quietly with jazz chords

Harmonizing emotions

Familiar yet so new

With daydreams

Of nights with you holding me.

Oh, how cruel this world seems

Calling us lost romantics

Or silly sentimentalists

Too sweet for cynics

Who brutally beat us up

They have never known

The scent of roses

How your garden blooms

The freedom of release

We transform from our cocoon.
