sandcastles

iyan

humans are inane beings
their deep-rooted sentimentality far greater than reason
one can only build a sandcastle where the sand is wet
but where the sand is wet, the tide comes in
no matter what stands in its path, the tide sweeps it away
the white tendrils of seafoam will slowly lick away at the foundation
until it tumbles into a pile of reincarnating soil
or perhaps a sudden wave will strike and your creation is sent crashing down
either way, the only thing the tide will bring is destruction
yet we still build sandcastles.

i stand at the line that divides the land and expanse of salty blue
the tide engulfs my ankles till my feet imprint on the sand
I let the salt from my eyes fall as it mixes with the ocean
grey rolling clouds above me represent the ones inside me
as i stand on the ultimate boundary line, the salty air beckoning me forward
sounds and lights from ships across seas calling my name to step in the water
the tide washes in and i, a lone sandcastle, stand in its path
turn back, and i abandon my peace to erode at the shore
drift forward, and i return to earth forevermore.

  • Comment from author about the poem: this poem was inspired by a poem in a game called doki doki literature club. i wanted to write about how sometimes people do things knowing very well what the consequences of their actions are and how sometimes people do it for the sole purpose of said consequences. a reoccurring situation that came to mind while writing it was how parents who are unfit to be parents still bring up children knowing fully well that they are incapable of doing so but still do anyway due to societal pressure and whatnot. would love to hear yalls interpretations on this one :D
