When Love Forgot

Charles Edward York

Love leaves us out a lot
Anytime someone walks alone
Down a street without shade
When wheels might have made
A hard road much easier.

Love says someone else has time
Let them take care of it
I got better things to do
Than pull somebody's straps up
Mine are trouble enough.

Love sleeps in late around here
Ignoring knocks at the door
“Go away, get your own!”
Shouting so loud
Some run away in fear.

Love forgets to wear overalls
When so much work needs hands
Boots get left beneath excuses
Covering up stubborn desires
Hell bent on keeping things same.

Love used to go to church
Until religion fell out of fashion
And committees played games
Behind closed doors
Leaving the lost outside.

Love settles for pleasure
And sells friendship for a price
Sex, drugs and exploitation
Make it very lucrative even
Until the thrill is gone.

Love wastes time so well
Politicians tell lies about doing
And never seems notice
The masses outside their windows
Protesting until police take charge.

Love gets off on red tape
Celebrates bureaucracy moving slowly
Who worries around a cooler
About the ones in the sun
We got no quick fix anyways!

Love always goes to parties
Never into the street
It trades dirty jobs for red carpets
Bright lights and cameras
'Cause it's all about me, right?

Love doesn't bother with details
When slogans weigh less to lift
Just ask the ones who rather wrestle
Call people ugly names
And keep them away with walls.

Love forgot to visit a friend
When no one else was watching
“Stop your crying, things get better!”
Spoke to tears that fell to the floor
Until the body was discovered.

Love leaves money in its pockets
When help hears “Sorry”
Houses empty people like trash
Because compassion and patience
Don't pay the bills, uh huh.

Love has no face anymore
Hands and feet go missing, too
All because we don't see
Sadly the ones left hanging show us
The time when Love forgot.
