When I grow old,
I want to live in Alaska.
A world of snow-layered roads,
forests, and mountains.
Fields of trees, tall, thin,
stretching up to the sky -
but not too high.
There are not many people
who want to live in Alaska.
They have big dreams, and
they have ambitions that stretch
from sea to shining sea.
Alaska is isolated, and it is simple,
silent, and alone
and I don't mind that.
To me,
maybe the silent, snow-covered world
is a paradise, an escape.
Because every time I think
and I wonder where I want to go,
I see the snow-layered roads,
forests, and mountains.
Fields of trees, tall, thin,
stretching up to the sky -
but not too high.
Isn't it beautiful?

- Comment from author about the poem: I haven't written a poem before, so I wanted to start off with something simple, something free verse. I thought about my future when I wrote this. I know everyone has some sort of safe place, some sort of idea of paradise in their head. For me, that's what Alaska embodies. I feel comforted by snow and the cold, and I feel happy thinking about the beautiful, albeit lonely life of Alaska. If it wasn't already obvious, I wanted to emphasize this fact.
