Phantom

MattDyer

I am the phantom that appears in the mirror

When you look into those ocean blue eyes of your reflection

The waters stir as they wet your face with a silent embrace we all know so well

The hollowness you feel is that of your doing, you numbed yourself to feel

The tears come down as a warning sign, the fear comes out in waves

Do you look for comfort, or do you look to move on?

I am the phantom in the mirror who stirs the silence

Who cannot be felt, who cannot be found

Despite the emptiness, you continue on, the silence slices through your skin like a razor

I am the phantom, I am the ghost, I am the one that haunts you the most

Your desolate eyes lie to yourself, my silent eyes permeate your mind

I don’t mean to cause this pain, death embraced me and we were never the same

The grey won’t go away, the feeling of yesterday, your mind is stuck on repeat

I am the phantom in the mirror who follows your eyes as they search for mine

This process of mourning, will it ever end, knowing life will never be the same

Will you burn with the desire to join me on the far side of the sea

Or will you endure the darkest night of the soul

One day you’ll be whole again
One day you’ll be at home again

Until then I am the phantom who appears inside your mirror

Who willingly looks deep inside those ocean blue eyes

Every tear shed in grief at the most painful goodbye

I am the phantom whom you keep alive
