I am the fool
Who fell in love
With the characters
In my book.
A Melodrama paperback
Barely worth a second look.
With people who are make-believe
I find I am concerned.
I wait to see what happens next,
And what I might have learned.
I live their lives
As I live mine,
And never did expect
To find myself
Longing to find them
And connect.
The line between
Imagination and
What is clearly real,
Blurs as I seek
Love and caring.
As I try to feel
The figments of my creative mind.
And when it has to end,
I am the fool with a broken heart
At having lost a friend.

- Comment from author about the poem: I am writing a novel. I find myself infatuated with the characters. They take on a reality I sometimes think I shouldn\\\'t allow. Healthy? Unhealthy? Human?

Human. I wonder whether some of this is related to our subconscious mind. Somebody we met in the past with a particular look or characteristic. Interesting. The very best of luck with your novel.
I suppose if you can't relate to your characters, the readers won't either.
Plus, they do become friends after a while.
Thank You.
I can imagine this is true and each character has to be composed of exaggerated parts of personalities you have known or even yourself.
