Big Empty

Draven

I dream of the ocean

watching the tide come in

as I walk along the sand

seeing the rocks ahead being

washed over by the waves.

The creeping tide coming in,

leaving me no path in sight;

peaceful, yet dangerous and fierce.

Suddenly I am plunged deep into

bottomless swirling waters

of deep blue;

a big empty.

Yet I am one with the waters

and understand how to ride out the tide

  • Comment from author about the poem: I often dream of the ocean, exactly like this, not being swallowed by the water exactly, but knowing that I am trapped with no end in sight. Yet it is not scary, it is more enticing. I love the water.

    I like your writing .. water makes me think of relaxation .

    • A Boy With Roses

      I second what Yellowrose said. The imagery of water is so powerful.

        Thank you both so much. Yes me too, water is one of the most relaxing things for me. I believe in horoscopes (when it suits me...) and I am a water sign.

        you have what remains of a dream
        the return of a trip that you never undertook.
        it was more than a dream, more than a trip.
        It was a blue window to the sea.

          Your comment alone is a poem. Thank you ♡

          I like the transition from calmness to suddenly you plunge into the deep waters.

            I was born in California and lived in Huntington Beach for about 8 years. We lived a very short drive from the ocean on Prescott Lane, Huntington Beach California, within walking distance of Hope View Elementary School where I attended. (I love the ocean. It is the one place that I feel the most at home, the most relaxed and the most comfortable). I cannot remember very much of my childhood but there are several things that stick out when I remember that experience. One of the things I remember is visiting the beach in the evenings and seeing people out on the beach, sharing good times with friends and family . I remember images of people and evening campfires on the beach, (and of course, the sun setting over the beautiful ocean).

            Whenever I have the chance to be on a beach at any ocean, it makes me feel wonderful and “at home”. Unfortunately, I currently live in Atlanta 🤨…. No beach or ocean here…

            When I pass, I hope to have my ashes scattered in the ocean, as my final resting place.

            I appreciate your writing here. Thanks for reminding me of these things 👍

              Thank you for sharing that! I too, being from Australia, feel at home at the ocean. In Germany, I am not even close to one! I didn't think that would really matter so much, but I have found other things to make up for it, as you do. I also think I would like to have my ashes scattered over the ocean. 🙂

              Thank you for your feedback! xx
