SHE.

LinaGoldberg510

She wakes up in the morning, brushes her teeth, washes her face, puts concealer under her eyes.

To hide her dark circles.

She gets dressed and goes to work.

Greets everyone with a smile on her face.

She's says good morning, nice to meet you, she says thank you, and goodnight.

She comes home, shuts the door behind her, then closes her blinds.

She sits down at her kitchen table. Reminiscing of old memories. She thinks of happy times.

Everything is so quiet.

It seems like now, there is nothing but time.

What happens after time runs out?

This SHE wonders to herself.

It seems that after time runs out, all thats left...is time.

Life was not like this before.

So much has changed.

SHE takes a puff of her cigarette

The feeling she gets, cannot be explained

It eases her mind.

For a moment, she is able to see clearly

She's brought right back to this moment

Back to Reality.

Back to Now.

SHE looks out of her window.

Onto the snow covered trees in her backyard.

The view is so serene

She is dazzled

Why can't everything be this lucid

This SHE wonders to herself.

She hears a soft purring coming from below

She looks down to see a black cat rubbing against her leg.

Suddenly she is not alone.

SHE begins to ponder

What her calling is on this Earth

What mark will she leave

She contemplates the meaning of her existence

She contemplates the purpose of life

She reaches down to pet her cat

Who is now purring incessantly

The look of contentment in his eyes is so definitive

That must be happiness, SHE tells herself.

She goes upstairs and gets undressed.

Rinses off the remanence of the day

Then rests her legs at the foot of the bed

The sound of rain drops calms her spirit.

The snow from before is now being

washed away.

She lies down and pulls the blanket over her head, her eyes now shut.

She feels safe in her isolation

comforted although she is entirely alone.

Nothing can reach her here.

She longs to stay buried beneath these layered sheets for eternity

For here, SHE is finally content.

For a moment, she smiles

Before drifting off into the starry abyss

The continuum of time and space

are non existent here

Just as a single atom and the entire universe can simultaneously “be”

She is free to be SHE.

  • Comment from author about the poem: This poem was written during a time when I was feeling a lot of despair and loneliness. It’s really a poem based on self reflection and urges the reader to ponder the true meaning of happiness. In writing this piece, I tried to remind myself of what happiness meant to me, even if it was something I was struggling to feel in the current moment.
