Unhealthy Memories

Charles Edward York

The dry roots of unhealthy memories

Fall upon the floor as I cut you off

Your words of vitriol

Sliced my validity

And what little respect

I had for you

Melts away like dirty snow

You paved over my feelings

And painted me

In asphalt colors

Bleeding shades

I never wanted to wear.

Lifting up my eyes to pray you left

All of you in shambles

Lying beneath the ashes

Everything I lost

Showed how much I hurt

When you beat me

The injuries of your so-called

Affections were red flags

I finally saw

Gave me the keys

To unshackle myself

And my life free of you.
