You Never Knew

Charmaine Bartlett

I cried for days.

Your words cut deep, and blissfully unaware-

you lived your life,

as though all were well.

I wept at night...

while you stayed busy,

and, you never knew.

The pain was sharp and constant,

hard to hide-

though I hid it well,

I spoke when spoken to,

smiled on cue. Even listened

to the radio.

And, you never knew.

But I couldn't forget,

and the hurt remained.

The words were etched on my soul.

You had your own troubles-

and lived your life.

Though years have since passed,

still, you never knew.
