You offered me your dreams and I put nightmares in their place
For the truth you gave me I threw lies in your face
For your courage I returned cowardice
You with a burning faith I incredulous
For the joyful laughter of your young years
I gave you nights of bitter tears
The fire of your happy disposition
I quenched with a rain of cynicism
Too selfish with others you to share
I isolated you in solitary despair
I stole your ideas so brilliant
Then called you stupid and ignorant
I always said that my love for you was strong
If ever love could be, this one was wrong
It was not you but your strengths that I loved
Too blind to see, it was my own weaknesses that I hated
What I treated you as you became
We’re all responsible for what we tame
