Infraction
A decade now we’re two not one
yet you won’t let go
yes we have children but
that ribbon of compromise
ties only one arm
to you
my legs are mine
with the right to walk alone
take a different path with my home
my heart, our boys
so don’t stride in to question
shout my choices down
assume the old default
don't over-reach
with demand couched as concern
and indignant enflamed responses
to my frontiers
a decade now we’re two not one
I need no permissions
from you.

- Comment from author about the poem: This poem is about attempts to manage a relationship that never ends when you have children, when you need to walk away but can't, and when your ability to freely respond to infractions on your personal space is often curtailed by the need to maintain some form of civility and consensus in front of children.
