Carrying The Cross Of Freedom

Parkbenchtales

Carrying the Cross of Freedom

Some called her witch some called her a whore

When she carried my burden up the hill to Calvary

Twas the cross of freedom that she bore

She was carrying that cross for you and me

I saw those bullet wounds in her hands

Struggling with that cross towards Calvary

She bore the symbol of freedom for our lands

She was carrying that cross for you and me

They tried to stop her with shells from a tank

But she kept walking that hill up to Calvary

Walking with determination right up that bank

She was carrying that cross for you and me

She was draped in the yellow and the blue

When she walked up that hill to Calvary

In the sky above a white dove flew

She was spilling her blood for you and me

She’s carrying that cross for the yellow and the blue

I heard evil cries as her peace was maligned

But she’s the strength to see a new Calvary through

For she is carrying freedom’s cross for all of mankind
