WHEN I CLOSE MY EYES

Mr.Morris Holland Derry III

When I close my eyes I see the life of Freddie Gray
Tears rolling down my face as I’m wondering why anyone would have to die that way
I’m sitting here with my head bowed down
Thinking about the lives of Trayvon Martin, Tamir Rice and Michael Brown
And I just want to know why
Why did they have to die?
I’m wondering why there was no justice for Tanisha Anderson in Cleveland Ohio
And I’m wondering why Stephon Clark and Botham Jean had to go
When I close my eyes I see the life of Akai Gurley
Another life that was taken too early
And I’m constantly thinking about Breonna Taylor
Wondering why the justice system failed her!!
And I cry over the death of Walter Scott
Wondering why he too was shot
I think about Alton Sterling, Anthony hill and Korryn Gaines
Amongst the many names
And my tears only continue to fall
As I can’t help but to think about them all
When I close my eyes I see the life of Renisha McBride
Why did she too have to die?
And I asked God to help me understand
What really happen to Sandra Bland
And I’m waiting for someone to explain to me
Explain to me why those three had to go and kill Ahmaud Arbery!!
For Mr. George Floyd and for Mr. Eric Garner
I’m out here fighting a little harder
And I don’t know how much more we can take
Because I now see Jacob Blake
When I close my eyes!

The immense sadness of your heart seeps from your every word. This is such a heartfelt piece, devoted to those who never got to fulfill. And when we ask why, the question seems to out into a void. God bless you, all of us in our sorrow.
