Refugee
I am a refugee
I am a human being just like you
The hot summer sweltering heat suffocates me,
The cold winter chills my bones
I have come with hope, hope is all I have
I am a refugee
I am a human being just like you
You have dreams , may your dreams come true
I too once dreamt , now scattered on the beaches of uncertainty
I am a refugee
I am a human being just like you
I walk like a zombie, with memories
Memories of young girls plucking flowers, of young boys playing , of lovers whispering in the moonlight
Memories too of haunted houses, shrill cries of women, sobbing of old age, of fear ruling the streets.
I am a refugee
I am a human being just like you
Lost my land, lost my house, lost my livelihood, to a tsunami of hate.
I am your mirror of the worst nightmare you had
I am a refugee
I am a human being just like you
Our land was as beautiful as yours
Our days were enchanting, our nights romantic
Until “ Hate” marched in with blood dripping swords
Until ominous thundering clouds of divisive politics shred to pieces the fabric of our society
I am a refugee
I am a human being just like you
I am neither a white nor black nor brown
I am neither a Muslim, nor a Hindu, nor a Christian
I am a product of persecution ,of war , of poverty
I am a refugee
I am a human being just like you
Do not look at me through the prism of race, Nationality, Religion.
But as one human being to another.
