Lullaby For The Broken-Hearted

Charles Edward York

What is love when it leaves

And the one left behind

Lies in the dark?

How does a heart begin to tell

The pillow in so many tears?

All the years you spend

Waiting for someone

Suddenly streaks away

Leaving you behind

With no one left to hold.

I heard love is for the lucky

Who are pretty enough

Or grab the goods

Before the receipt arrives

How many times must I file

A report for a stolen heart?

I’m not a thing to use

Or a selfish game

Someone needs to play

With everything to lose.

Gimme love I can share

Who shares so sweetly

And spares no expense

A love so strong and so kind

Without conditions

And no pretense

A love with mercy

Smiles and laughter to spare

Without strain of effort

Who cuddles me with care.
