The Sea

purplelilac

The cruel salt air blinds

As we tread on our littered paths

Screaming minds

Inaudible

Silenced by the howling winds

of painful reminders

causing so many to plummet into early graves

Voices whispering not good enough not good enough

Our states more than rough

Voices whispering Why aren’t we more tough

We slowly agonizingly  becoming slaves of our own expectations

Every day frustrations

Pour into the sea we are already drowning in

Thunder pounding disappointments

The lightings of anxiety piercing our hearts

Screaming minds

Silenced by the crashing waves

Waves of trial grief, and sorrow slamming into our bodies

causing us to ram towards the rocky sea floor

We are drowning in this sea

Of unknowns, doubt, uncertainty,and worry

Our struggles coil around our feet like a snake and we are anchored down.

Our arms flail as we struggle

We kick fiercely

Desperate to be free

Longing for glee

Glee not reduced to a mere detour

Hearts longing to soar

Yet…

We only seem to succeed in swallowing the bitter saltiness of reality

In painful gulps

And becoming exhausted.

Everything hurts and eventually, we give in

FIghting against the anchor is useless

FIghting against the monstrous waves are useless

Fighting against the sea is useless

We stop,

stop trying

There is no use

We breakdown

And we drown.

Little dare to search this sea we constantly battle in

Some of the ones drowning refuse to be found

We are bound to the shame

Because dare us to admit any issue with our mental health

We are cast to into the flames

Just a simple saying as

“I’m working on my mental wellness is frowned upon”

So little can offer help

And even smaller can receive aid

The help they so desperately needed

Even if all it needed to be was a hand to hold

Or a sign they aren’t alone

Someone to trust

So we don’t fade

into dust

Yet still destitute  we remain

in any solutions regarding our mental health

  • Comment from author about the poem: Poetry is an amazing expressive tool and has helped me through a lot. I hope my poetry, or poetry in general, and this site will do the same for you. This poem expresses how it felt whenever my depression and anxiety got worse a few months ago. It also represents how many other people feel when they go through the same issues and cry out for those who don't have a voice.

very nicely written and yes it is sad how mental health becomes a revolving door for many, sadly I don't believe enough is actually being done to solve the issue, people need to empower each other and find help via a Psychiatrist first to make sure is not a brain imbalance and if not then proceed with a psychologist or mental health counselor that has a treatment plan that can truly make a breakthrough for them, some individuals are just having a difficult time adjusting through life processes, not necessarily suffering from an actual biological or neurological brain imbalance, a lot of confusion goes on over what is what, therefore the first step is essential.

Well written. I can totally relate to your words. Thank you for sharing and expressing yourself. We have so much to learn about mental health.

I had to read it again. I really love this one.

This is so expressive and truly gives insight about mental health. I love that it ends with hope… not only do you talk about how it feels, you offer council on what helps… a hand to hold…someone to trust. Sometimes people really do want to help but don’t know how… thank you for sharing ideas on how to help in a way that is meaningful! Very well done!!!

You have a gift of being able to find words to powerfully describe emotions. The rough sea- such perfect imagery. You are not alone- so many are suffering. Thank you for having the courage to share your struggle so we can help others talk about mental health just like we talk about other health conditions. And from the conversations, I hope we will find ways to help one another so no one is alone in this.
